Remote teams: supporting roles

We often hear requests for a remote developer to deliver on project tasks. These requests can come from a desire to minimize cost by going offshore, scale up in an existing project, or perhaps avoid the commitment and risk of a full-time employee at that point in time.

But regardless of the reason a big driver of success is to have the proper support in place to enable the developer to deliver on expectations.

A lone developer sitting far away needs someone to test the code, someone to ask questions about desired functionality, and someone to handle the communication with the client. That's why additional roles such as professional testers, functional consultants, and lead developers are vital to any remote development effort.

Supporting roles should not be seen as an added cost but as a way to minimize the time spent going back-and-forth which ultimately means less time to deliver the final solution.
